On Monday, Palma’s new ‘365’ Tourism Foundation was officially formed. Mayor of Palma, Mateus Isern, presided over the event at Bellver castle.

The new organisation’s main objective is to promote Mallorca's capital as a holiday destination on a year round basis, to both domestic and international visitors. The plan is to diversify and appeal to the ever changing needs of the holiday market whilst improving existing attractions.

Isern spoke of the foundation’s role in getting the city’s economy back on track. He believes this will, in turn, lead to the creation of new jobs and further investment. He said the project had been a priority since the government came to power, earlier this year.

The initiative is a joint private and public venture, with involvement from Mallorca’s leading tourism and business groups. Isern feels this mix will allow for transparency and better management of funds.

The public organisations involved include the Port Authority, Palma Council and AENA, the Spanish airport authority. Private sector involvement is extensive and includes names such as Iberostar, Melia Hotels International, Air Berlin and Air Europa, each contributing €3,000 for the creation of the foundation with a further €97,000 pledged.

Palma Council matched private sector investment, giving the foundation a total budget of €3.6 million for the year.
