Palma International Airport arrivals area extended

Son Sant Joan airport to extend international arrivals area to cope with increasing passenger numbers

Palma de Mallorca's airport Son Sant Joan is undergoing extensions to the international arrivals area in order to deal with the increasing number of non-EU passengers.

Last year the airport had record numbers of passengers. The airport has seen a significant increase in passengers coming from Scandinavian countries such as Norway (up 39%) and Sweden (up 21%) and also in passengers from Russia (an increase of 35%).

The extension is mainly to cope with those passengers arriving from outside the European Union. Passengers travelling from outside Europe to Mallorca increased by 13.13% last year and the extensions are to better manage security controls.

Non-EU citizens have to go to a separate baggage reclaim area which may have extra carrousels added depending on demand. The upgrade will also address the customs areas used by the Guardia Civil and the National Police passport control point.

The work is expected to take place before the summer season begins.
