Palma International Boat Show 2012 cancelled

Lack of interest from exhibitors and reduced government funding have led to this year’s Palma International Boat Show being called off.

Organisers announced their decision last Thursday. The 29th edition of the show had been due to take place in Palma de Mallorca from 28th April to 6th May.

The ongoing economic crisis meant the government reduced funding for the event by 16%. Exhibitor numbers were also down on last year by a third. In a bid to boost attendance organisers had reduced exhibitors’ fees by 30% with little impact. Despite plans to downsize the show, the committee decided it was no longer financially viable.

Whilst many will be disappointed, the nautical industry feels next year’s event, its 30th anniversary, will now receive new impetus as a result of the decision. The government, too, is committed to supporting the show in 2013 and hopes to see more involvement from local industry on Majorca.
