Palma de Mallorca has been chosen to host the start and finish of the Global Ocean Race 2011-12. This around-the-world sailing race is for 40 foot boats and will start on 25th September 2011 and is predicted to finish around the 10th June 2012.

Race director, Josh Hall, wanted to create an official around-the-world race that was affordable and achievable for sailors who did not have access to multi-million pound budgets. The development of the affordable monohull Class40 boat, designed to allow amateur sailors have a crack at offshore races, meant that the Global Ocean Race could become a reality. With a maximum length of 40 feet, the Class40 uses carbon fibre for the mast and boom, and underwater attachments, number of sails and their materials are strictly controlled.

The course for The Global Ocean Race 2011-12 will go from Mallorca to Cape Town, South Africa, then on to Wellington, New Zealand, followed by Punta del Este in Uruguay and Charleston, USA before finishing back in Mallorca. The course covers a distance of approximately 30,000 nautical miles and sails through some of the most challenging seas in the world.

Palma de Mallorca hosts many sailing events throughout the year, including the Superyacht Cup and the Copa del Rey. The sailing community enjoy world-class marine services along with varied and stylish onshore facilities in Palma, which make it a popular choice for sailors, their families and spectators.
