Plans to smarten Port d'Andratx to be debated

A petition to stop the redevelopment of the seafront in Port d'Andratx has been lodged with the Department of Public Works. Plans to move the fishing trawlers from the main front to their own jetty have been welcomed by local businesses who want the seafront to become a more attractive promenade for visitors. The plan is to smarten up the seafront area and to have less through-traffic to make the area more tourist friendly.

Council members of the Mallorcan Socialist Party have organised the protest with the help of the Partido Poular party, in direct opposition to the rest of Andratx council. They feel that the modernisation is a mistake, and that visitors enjoy seeing the local fisherman deal with their catch on the existing jetty. They wish to retain the cultural heritage of the harbour and are concerned that any redevelopment will remove the character that gives Port d'Andratx its charm.
