Playa de Palma regeneration project to be redeveloped

The Consortium for the improvement and landscaping of Palma Beach has been forced to reconsider it's ambitious plans for the redevelopment of the area. The project has been open to public scrutiny for the past few months, and over 1300 objections has been lodged from local residents and businesses. The main complaint is about the forced expropriations that the project requires.

The project will now focus on the less controversial 'facelift' aspect, where a new underground waste collection system will be created, and improvements to existing green areas will be made. Existing buildings are to be repainted and a general tidy-up to the area will be undertaken.

The original plan was to demolish a number of out-dated hotels and some residential buildings, but this complex idea has not gone down well with the locals. The cost of the project has also been attacked by the Mallorcan political opposition parties and there have been calls for the resignation of the President of the Consortium, Joana Barcelo. The Consortium recognise that there were some presentational issues with the project, and it will now redesign the proposal. They hope that once local residents and business's see the improvements that the regeneration will bring, they will be more supportive of the expropriations that are integral to the projects success.

Playa de Palma has the potential to be a world class beach destination for Majorca, with its fabulously long & deep white sandy beach, and its proximity to both the airport and Palma city. Todays sophisticated tourism market would flock to a Miami beach style seafront in the Mediterranean that would draw visitors to Mallorca throughout the year. Let's hope that the cash can be found to carry out these changes and that the compromises required can be agreed.
