Port of Soller tram works rumble on.

The road works along the front of Port de Soller to re-route the tram track are causing apprehensions amongst local businesses as complications put back the finish date of phase one of the upgrade. The tram was due to be reinstated from 1st February but despite the round-the-clock work, the track is not ready.

The Coastal Department who is responsible for the works, want to complete the initial phase by Easter, and continue the project in October. The bars, cafes and restaurants along the front are concerned that the area will not be sufficiently tidy for the summer season and are worried that visitors will be turned off, thereby affecting their profits.

So far, the tram tracks have been replaced and relocated into the centre of the road, with piles of earth developing to either side. The tram has been replaced by a minibus to provide transport between Soller and the Port Soller. Local businesses want assurances that the area will be resurfaced and fitted with public lighting before the Easter cut-off point. However, resurfacing cannot be completed until essential services such as drainage, electricity and telephone cabling are installed.

Phase two of the project involves the creation of the board walk and will commence next October.
