Red Cross campaign for the public to protect their skin

As your long awaited holiday in the beautiful sunshine is finally here, before you think about baking yourself senseless in the sun to obtain that perfect tan, the Spanish Red Cross are asking you to think twice and cover up. This week, the Spanish Red Cross and the Association for the Fight Against Cancer (AECC) signed an agreement in Palma to launch a campaign warning the public of the risks of skin cancer.

All the beaches that are managed by the Red Cross such as those around Palma, and beaches at Pollensa, Capdepera, Soller and Llucmajor, will have information stands set up at the lifeguard stations. Here, information will be provided about the dangers of sunbathing along with advice on how to protect yourself against the sun’s harmful rays.

AECC have informed beach management and rescue personnel on the advice in the pamphlets they will be handing out and how to respond to any possible questions they may get.

Don’t be surprised if you are approached by Red Cross volunteers throughout July and August, as their aim is to make sure they are talking to everyone about the need to be adequately protected from the sun’s ultra violet rays.

Although we all need a bit of sunlight for the health of our bodies, said the AECC, over-exposure to its radiation over a long term period can have disastrous consequences.

Everyone’s skin tolerance to the sun is different - there are those who should not even go for a walk in the sun without putting on high protection factor sun cream, and those who can be out and about for a while without any protection. The campaign will last until the end of September.
