Residents' discount for the Soller tunnel to be continued

The Balearic government has had a change of heart when it comes to the discount that residents of the Soller valley receive when travelling through the Soller tunnel to access the rest of Mallorca. The discount had been promised by the previous Socialist government but no rebate has in fact been paid to residents for over a year.

Only a couple of weeks ago, the Minister for Transport announced that there was no money in the budget to compensate residents who had to drive through the tunnel on a regular basis to get to work in Palma de Mallorca or beyond. Soller residents responded by protesting outside the government buildings in Palma last Saturday, demanding that the subsidy be retained.

The grant, which costs the government €1.5 million each year, is now to be funded by rearranging the existing budget for transport. The Minister also announced at the same meeting that there will be no investment in Majorca's railways next year because of budget restraints.
