Scorching summer temperatures set to continue on Mallorca

After a cooler than average July in Majorca, temperatures have soared in August and yesterday saw the hottest day of the year when the thermometer struck 36 degrees centigrade in Palma and the airport. The Balearic Meteological Agency have said that this heat wave will continue until Monday, with the south of the island and the northern mountains being on 'yellow alert' (some risk from high temperatures).

Temperatures are expected to stay around 33-34 degrees in the shade during the daytime, and will only fall to 19-24 degrees at night. With not much of a breeze to keep things fresh, it promises to be a sticky weekend.

The hot weather has brought mixed reactions from those who have to work in the heat. Cafes and juice bars are doing a thriving trade as visitors and locals stop to pick up cold drinks and take advantage of any shade to be had, whilst taxi drivers bake in their cars as they wait for passengers.

This summer's heat wave has also seen an increase in forest fires on Majorca; during the last week twelve fires have required the attention of the emergency services, the most recent being in s'Arracó and Galilee in the south west of Mallorca.

As ever, the advice for everyone on the island is to drink plenty of fluids, avoid sitting out in the heat of the day (12 noon to 3pm) and to wear high factor sun cream.
