Shops in Palma de Mallorca to open on Sundays

Bank holiday takings convince retailers that weekends are where profits are made

The shop owners and restaurateurs in Palma de Mallorca are asking for opening hours to be extended to include all Bank Holidays and Sundays.

After decades of resistance from retailers and numerous city councils trying to convince restaurant and shop owners to open on Sundays it was the Easter holidays takings that have convinced the Mallorcan proprietors that weekend openings are a good idea.

The trial period, that included the Easter Bank Holiday weekend, saw takings increase by ten percent in shops and a massive forty percent in restaurants. The current plan is for opening hours to be extended to include all Sundays and Bank Holidays, excluding May 1st, until the end of October to coincide with the tourist season. Retailers are now asking the Palma City Council to allow them to open on all Sundays and public holidays all year round.

It seems that it wasn't just tourists who were shopping and dining out but local Mallorcans and residents of Palma too and the numbers spoke for themselves.

An increase in opening hours is likely to mean more jobs and more spending in the capital, which can only be a good thing. And it now means you can buy a new outfit and wear it to dinner on Sunday.
