After a determined 17 hour session between the airport unions and the airport authority (AENA), preliminary agreement has been reached that should ensure the Spanish airport strikes are avoided. The initial agreement will be presented to union members next week for approval.

The news of the agreement came hot on the heels of Mallorcan hotels reporting that they were receiving cancellations during the period of the first set of strike dates over Easter. The Secrectary of State for Transport, Isaiah Taboas said after the meeting that tourists and visitors to Spain should feel confident that their travel plans during Easter and the summer will not be disrupted.

The draft agreement guarantees that there will be no job cuts during the part-privitisation of the airports, and that workers concessions & working conditions for airport workers will not be affected. There are also provisions for AENA to have a presence on the new board of directors after privitisation.

The unions have made it clear that they do not support the governments plans to part-privitise the Spanish airports but they were keen to reach some sort of agreement with the government that would avoid strike action but would protect their members.
