Special mobility chairs open up Mondrago Park

Two chairs are available at Mondrago

A new scheme has been launched across the Balearic Islands to make it easier for people with reduced mobility to enjoy the natural parks.

Two specially designed chairs are now available in Mondrago Natural Park as well as parks in Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera. The chairs were bought as part of a joint venture between the Department of Agriculture, the Caixa Foundation and the charity Mountain for All. €68,000 was donated by financial institutions and made the purchase of the twelve chairs, which are to be shared by the four islands possible.

The chairs have a single wheeled, rickshaw/sedan design and although they do not grant individual freedom to the user, as they need to be pulled along by an able-bodied friend, they are designed to move over uneven terrain better than a conventional wheelchair.

Mondrago park is on the south East coast of Mallorca near the resort of Cala d'Or. The park itself is full of walking routes and is quite beautiful but the best thing about Mondrago is the beach there. Fine white sands and two sheltered bays surrounded by low volcanic rocks await visitors. The water is beautiful and clear and as Cala d'Or is so near by there are plenty of places to get some food or a few drinks.

Hopefully this new scheme will mean that people who could not normally access Cala Mondrago will have a chance to enjoy some time in the sun on what is my favourite beach on the island.
