Palma city council yesterday told shops and businesses in the centre of Majorca's capital that, as of April, they can open on Sundays and public holidays. The council says the area from Avenidas to Calle Jaume III will become the focal shopping area for tourists. Anyone trading within the designated space will now have the right to open on what have traditionally been days of rest.

Retailers with less than 300 square metres already have permission to open on Sundays. To date they have chosen not to exercise this right. Pimem, the association for small to medium businesses, hopes that this will change now the ruling also applies to larger department stores.

The council has said that it will monitor takings during the additional opening hours. In the event extra income is not sufficient to warrant opening, they will drop the new scheme.
