Sunny days for Mallorcan tourism

The travel industry has certainly felt the economic pressures of the last few years. But thankfully, that much maligned acronym, ‘GFC’, features less and less in our conversations, and a recent industry conference points to sunny days ahead for Majorca.

Tourism professionals from around the globe converged in Madrid last weekend to attend the 2011 FITUR International Tourism Trade Fair. Of particular note was the positive outlook for Spain and the Balearic Islands.

Major tour operators in key markets, in particular the UK, are reporting significant surges in interest and bookings to this region, with increases in sales of holidays up 10-20% year on year. As the Pound gains on the Euro, Spain is becoming increasingly good value for this market. Also contributing to demand are tourists from Russia, France, Italy, Germany and Belgium.

In another boost, the latest AITO survey (Association of Independent Tour Operators) has revealed a jump in consumer confidence with clear signs that travellers are more positive in their plans for the year ahead. The survey found that 62% of agency respondents are ‘extremely’ confident about sales for 2011 and 46% have reported a ‘good’ or ‘extremely good’ start to January.

The forecast for Mallorca is very strong as it continues to be one of Spain’s most highly-sought-after destinations. These already healthy sales results will only improve as Brits start to thaw and let their thoughts wander to sun-drenched days on our idyllic island.
