Known for his ability to play through any pain barrier the Mallorcan tennis hero Rafa Nadal decided to play in the Shanghai Masters this week despite having an inflamed appendix.

He returned home to Mallorca yesterday following a second round loss to fellow Spaniard Feliciano Lopez. After being diagnosed with appendicitis on Sunday, Nadal insisted he was still fit to play in the tournament and was on a course of antibiotics to relieve some of the pain and prolong the need for immediate surgical intervention.

Nadal said he would consult his doctors back in Mallorca before deciding when to remove his appendix. “I have to talk with my doctors when I get back home. It is true that the doctor here told me that [eventually] I have to take it out. Because when you have it once, the normal thing is that it is going to come back. Sooner or later I have to take it out.”

The 28 year old made a stop off in Barcelona on his way home to undertake some medical tests, and following the results of this he is hopeful that the inflamed appendix can be treated with antibiotics for the moment. "His clinical progress is good. He isn't showing any symptoms at the moment," said his spokesman in a statement. "He will continue the antibiotics treatment for 4-5 days and, depending on his progress, he will take the necessary decisions."

Nadal will be hoping to complete the 2014 season at the Swiss Indoors event, Paris Masters and then the World Tour Finals in London. We wish him a speedy recovery.
