US citizen dies on Palma-Andratx highway
An American woman has died in a car crash when a Peugot 206 travelling in the opposite direction crossed over the central reservation and collided with the American's car. The victim has been named as Martha Vargas Chambers, aged 69 years. She was on holiday with her husband in Mallorca.
The accident happened at 3.40pm yesterday afternoon on the MA-1 main road from Andratx to Palma, by the exit to Palmanova. Mrs Chambers was travelling in a Volkswagen Polo with her husband, who was driving. Her husband escaped the crash with mutilple injuries. Emergency services were swiftly on the scene but they were unable to save Mrs Chambers life. The road was closed for several hours whilst the victims were treated and the vehicles were removed.
Police are investigating why the Peugot crossed the motorway lanes and ended up on the wrong side of the road. The woman who was driving the Peugot suffered severe injuries and had to be cut out of the wreck by firemen.
