Winemakers in Mallorca sold 898,600 litres of wine to the rest of Spain and exported 325,900 litres abroad in the season 2010-2011. Mallorca produced 1,637,600 litres of wine in 2011.

Mallorcan wine is also the third highest exporter in the Protected Geographical Indication category.

The Protected Geographical Indication was created by the European Union to promote and protect foodstuffs from certain geographical regions. Wine produced in Mallorca and other areas of the Balearics carry this label in order to prove it has been produced in this region. The Protected Geographical Indication has less stringent regulations on quality than other Spanish wine labels but wine with this label is usually in the mid to high range in terms of quality.

Vineyards in the Protected Geographical Indication make up 77.7% of all wines sold in Spain. Mallorca's wine has the third highest market share at 0.8%; Castilla has the most with 92.1% and Extremadura comes in second with 5.2%. The Vins de la Terra de Mallorca has the fourth largest area of vineyards with 434 hectares which is cultivated by 128 growers. They also have the third largest number of employees working on these vineyards.

The Mallorcan wine industry put their successes down to one major factor and that is quality. The industry opted to make a well produced, quality product rather than a cheap low range wine in order to establish the island as a good wine producer. The Mallorcan brand is now recognised as one of the best wines in the mid-high range category and has been for more than 20 years.
