A good summer means the harvest crews are out in the fields already

The Tianna Negre (Binissalem) and Ca sa Padrina (Sencelles) wineries have commenced their harvest a week ahead of the usual schedule, due to the high temperatures and good weather we've been experiencing so far this summer.

These wineries have started by collecting the Chardonnay and Muscat variety grapes and conform to the usual process which is to harvest the foreign varieties that are less adapted to the climate of the island. Ribas winery is also expected to start their harvest this week and then the rest of the Binissalem DO (protected designation of origin) wineries will follow suit next week.

The forecast reported by the Binissalem DO for the harvest is of excellent quality and good quantity this year. The manager of the Tianna Negre winery said “The outlook is very good; the grapes are very sweet, with a good degree of maturity, because it has not rained in July”.

Last year’s harvest was delayed as rains complicated the operation and although the harvest was plentiful the complications meant part of the production was lost. This year the hope is for a good harvest if the weather stays on side, and although the volume will not be as abundant as last year the amount harvested is of great importance and producers are optimistic for the forthcoming harvest.
