Sonia Vazquez: Manager at Es Revellar Art Resort

Working in paradise....

featured in Meet the locals Author Ellie Mahoney, Mallorca Editor Updated

When is a hotel not just a hotel? When you install artwork and museum pieces in the building, rooms and grounds.. Es Revellar Art Resort is a new kind of experience where you can stay in quite unique surroundings and feel totally immersed in culture.

Sonia Vazquez is the manager there and she tells how the idea for the Art Resort came about and a little more about what makes it so special..

How did the idea come about for your business? - It's pretty unique, tell us how it all started?

During a vacation trip to the Seychelles after a very long round trip, which caused a lot of jet-lag, the only thing they had were very nice beaches, but nothing else. It was very boring. I experienced the same thing during another trip to the Caribbean too.

We knew there were about 60,000 Art Collectors and about 1,000,000 art lovers in Europe who deserved a vacational offer focused on their preferences. We also knew that the traditional museums had become massified and that there is a global trend whereby art emigrates to nature, without the limitations of space that affect urban museums.

All these ideas were put together to create the Art Resort concept, which in reality is a museum with rooms. Additionally we threw a strong dose of landscaping and gardening to the mix.

Why did you choose Campos as a location?

With regard to the location we established the following conditions:

  • The area had to be safe
  • The area had to have excellent medical facilities
  • It had to be close to a “hub” Airport with plenty of flights and low fares and not more than two flight hours from the centre of Europe
  • It had to be close to crystalline waters and plenty of palm trees

These conditions immediately directed us to Mallorca. If we added the requirement that the area had to be undeveloped and close to the best beach on the island, then the obvious choice was Campos..

What makes Mallorca a special place to be for someone in your profession or in general?

The same reasons that we have indicated above, as well as the “time of changes” we are living in. The government have trust in a new, quality tourism offer that better respects environment and the Island’s essence, and we really feel committed to it. Mallorca is a really special place to work and develop professional career for all tourism professionals, just because it is a popular holiday destination, and it is a pleasure to work here.

What are the best bits about your job?

To work in paradise and to have the chance to offer a singular proposal, that makes visitors enjoy art and creativity. All this, in a charming and family environment, that really has sense for those who really love our job, taking care of clients. The satisfaction of satisfied clients, nothing else really...

And the worst bits?

To go back to the real world after a season of work ;) Seasonality, in fact, is an added challenge when maintaining quality standards, quality staff teams, permanent cash flow, and so on and a balanced standard on prices.

What is in store for the future with your business, any exciting projects in the pipelines that you can share with us?

We have an approved project to triple the number of rooms, to build a 200 person restaurant, a great reception building and a third pool, all that to better enjoy and discover art.

Where would send someone who was after that something 'something special' to stay, eat or drink?

Without any doubt to drink a glass of champagne under the stars enjoying a light and sound show in our great mural. (but in fact, in every other art corner around the estate!)

Your favorite place for lunch or dinner, if you're just looking for a quick bite to eat?

In our vegetable kitchen-garden, surrounded by nice views of the field and vineyard, where you can enjoy a short but delicious menu using our own orchard products and the best fresh fish. It is like having a taste of Mallorca.

Talking of food and drink, what can you recommend from your menu?

We believe in fresh products from our local area - traditional Mediterranean cooking with the best raw materials. We don’t waste our time with “high cuisine” standards which makes for very expensive dinners. We really trust in authenticity and the magic of the essential things. Old fishermen advise us on old recipes that they got from their ancestors, and on how to get the best ingredients. Every single client that we have had has rated our food as EXCELLENT. So I recommend just enjoying our menu which changes every day.

Where will we find the best coffee, paella or empanades?

Paella without any doubt in our restaurant, coffee in our library with an apple pie and “empanades”… we have them from Can Nadal, a really good bakery in Campos.

What has been your best ever day in Mallorca?

My first visit to Cabrera Marine Park in a sail boat. We recommend it to our clients to do on a private boat.

Do you remember your first trip to the Island?

On a trip with my school. It was so time ago…

What do you do when you're not working?

Various sports and cultural activities. Enjoying the time with my friends.

Which is your favorite shop in Mallorca?

The Santa Catalina Market in Palma.

Yachts or speedboats? What's your preference & why?

Sailboats. I love the silence, fresh air and to rock with the waves..

..

Es Revellar Art Resort offers Art Dinners throughout the summer for you to enjoy right through to September.
