A major discharge of waste forced the closure of Ciudad Jardin beach

The popular beach resort of Ciudad Jardin, also known as Ciutat Jardi, lies to the east of Palma and has been heralded as the next 'up and coming' place for the cool and trendy set of Mallorca.

With a lovely white sandy beach and a promenade that takes you either back to Palma or east to Playa de Palma, it has glorious south-westerly views of the Bay and Palma. Sadly on Saturday the scene was not quite so pretty as a sewage pipe broke and ran waste water into the Torrent Gros stream and into the sea along the beach.

The red flag was raised by security staff and bathers were asked to leave the water, the beach was roped off and swimmers were banned. The EMAYA, the municipal water treatment company, have confirmed the presence of E Coli bacteria in the water and have been pumping in clean water from the treatment plant into the area in order to speed up the natural cleaning cycle of the water.

As of yesterday the beach was open again to swimmers but the security services were urging caution.
