Good Prospects for the Archaeological Site of Almallutx in Mallorca
The excavation has been hindered by funding problems
The 120,000 m2 Islamic site of Almallutx, near the town of Escorca, was discovered in 2011 and played a vital role in the Islamic resistance during the conquest of Mallorca in the 13th century. However, the excavations have suffered from various issues due to it being underwater.
A group of representatives from the Mallorcan government and Palma's council visited the settlement on Saturday to witness the special conditions faced by archaeologists at Almallutx first-hand. Difficulties arise mainly from the fact that the remains are submerged under the Gorg Blau dam, allowing them only to dig during the two driest months of the year.
The fact that it is underwater also complicates their application for public funding, to the point that up until now they have relied on private donations and crowdfunding. Happily, the authorities present on Saturday promised to review the grant system so that they can apply for public money.
If it all comes together, we might soon have another wonderful archaeological site to visit in Mallorca. Until then, why not check out our guide on castles and ruins?
