In the footsteps of Mallorca's writers

7 different walks to explore the literary history of Mallorca

featured in News & reviews Author Ana Hernández, Mallorca Editor Updated

Mallorca has played host to some of the best writers of the 19th and 20th century, attracted to the island's quiet atmosphere, beautiful landscapes and authentic spirit, which create the perfect environment for writing. You can now discover the relationship between the island and modern literature thanks to Walking on Words' seven hiking routes.

Started in 2015, this project invites visitors to step into the shoes of Mallorca's most illustrious literary guests through the creation of seven walks that take you to the places where they stayed, the sceneries that inspired them and the villages and people they portrayed in their novels and poems.

A great way to discover the hidden corners of the island and see Mallorca from a different perspective, these walks take you around Palma, Deià, Valldemossa, the Serra de Tramuntana, Pollença, Alcúdia, Sóller, Campos, Felanitx, Manacor, Artà, Petra and many other villages following in the footsteps of Jorge Luis Borges, Albert Camus, Camilo José Cela, Agatha Christie, Julio Cortázar, Robert Graves, Jules Verne, George Sand or Ramon Llull.

Explore the island this spring or escape the crowds this summer in the company of some of the best writers in the history of literature. You can visit the Walk on Words for more information on the routes, download their app to guide you, or purchase the WoW book.
