Keep Calm and Don't Litter...

Beach festivals & island fires this week mean Mallorca has to clean up its act

Although it was yet another fantastic and successful event, the remnants of the festivities of the Nit de Sant Joan have left there mark on the beaches around Mallorca.

This year in Palma alone there was eleven tons of rubbish collected during the celebrations on the 23rd June. The amount of waste is said to have doubled from the same event last year. As well as additional bins being placed along beaches there was also a mass clear-up operation in force the next morning with individuals sweeping the beach to collect the left behind rubbish.

And this litter has not been the only problem this week in Mallorca. A fire was started accidentally on the island of Sa Porrassa off the coast of Magaluf on Wednesday night. Two helicopters, police, fire-fighters and members of the nature conservation authorities were called to attend as the black smoke was seen for miles around. It has since been discovered that a lit cigarette from a British tourist is what caused the initial spark that led the fire to spread across the small island.
