Mallorca Tests Use of Drones to Combat Mosquitoes

Drones to be used to quickly find areas where mosquitoes are breeding

It sounds like something out of a science fiction film, but Palma council have decided to use drones to help prevent swarms of mosquitoes at certain places on the island.

Warmer than average temperatures for this time of year have meant that mosquitoes have started breeding earlier, and the council are employing a company with drones to search out problem areas at Son Satnt Joan airport and the lake at Ses Fontanelles.

This doesn't meant that tiny drones will be firing tiny rockets at the mosquitoes or spraying them with on-board pesticides, they will just be used to locate hard to access areas where the mosquitoes are thought to be breeding, meaning that workers with pesticides can be more effective in eradicating them. Getting access through marshy areas takes time and costs money, so it's hoped that this new technology could provide a useful solution.

Areas of Southwest Florida have already been investigating using the technology and it's believed to have been quite successful.
