Works will start in September to turn Palma's old dog track, on the northern outskirts of the city, into the first area of the new urban forest.

This is the initial phase of a larger project that will also involve creating a natural environment around the old cycle track, which will also be renovated and opened in 2019. The urban forest will link with Sa Riera Parc, resulting in a large green area near the town centre aimed at fighting Palma's high temperatures thanks to its extensive shaded zone and providing a cycling and walking friendly route connecting the centre to the outskirts.

500,000 euros have been budgeted for the first phase this ambitious project. The forest will have almost 300 different species of Mediterranean trees and plants, mainly oak and European nettle trees, but also almond, olive and pine trees.
