Regal Easter 2017 in Palma

The Spanish royal family spend Easter in Mallorca

featured in News & reviews Author Ana Hernández, Mallorca Editor Updated

King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain have attended Sunday Easter mass at the cathedral of Palma for the third consecutive year since they ascended the throne. They were joined by their children, princess Leonor and infanta Sofía, as well as former queen Sofía.

The tradition was started by King Juan Carlos, father of the current monarch, who liked spending the Semana Santa break at Marivent Palace in Cala Major, near Palma. Felipe VI has continued the custom of attending Sunday easter mass at Palma's cathedral, even if now the royal family do not visit their Mallorcan residence as often as they used to. Queen Sofía, on the other hand, did spend her Easter break at Marivent palace this year accompanied by her sister, Irene of Greece.

Marivent palace, the king's summer residence perched upon a cliff on Palma Bay, will open its gardens to the general public for free after Easter.
