Starting Your Day with a Coffee in Palma...

This popular pastime comes with its own set of problems!

featured in News & reviews Author Pam Williamson, Mallorca Editor Updated

With the growing popularity of coffee machines that use disposable capsules, both in cafes and restaurants and in private homes, comes the growing problem of waste and recyclable waste.

It may be convenient and taste great but how many of us happily throw those capsules straight in to the bin? And how many cups do you have a day? Times that by a week, a month and over the course of a year and that is an incredible amount of waste as we happily throw those coffee capsules in the bin.

The City Council of Palma is offering its residents a solution! In an agreement between EMAYA ( Municipal Company of Water and Sewage) and Nestle in Spain, there will now be two recycling bins provided for disposal of the capsules. One for aluminium and one for plastic. Nestle has committed to emptying the containers at least once a month and disposing of them in the appropriate ways.

The bins will be located at the Industrial Site Son Castello in Palma, at Calle Gremi Sucrers i Candeliers. Entrance to the site will be available seven days a week between 08:00 and 20:00.

So by no means stop enjoying that morning coffee whilst taking in the magnificent views around Mallorca, but make sure you do your bit and recycle those coffee capsules!
