For around an hour and a half on Friday night, the moon will be behind the Earth's shadow creating the longest lunar eclipse of the 21st century. It will all start at 20:25 and last until approximately midnight.

Also known as a blood moon for the red/orange hue given to the moon's surface, this will be a once in a lifetime experience. Fear not, if you're in Mallorca on Friday, you'll have plenty of chances to watch this astronomical phenomenon. Several public observation points have already been organised throughout Mallorca, and the local astronomy associations have many events planned all around the island.

In Mallorca, the Planetarium in Costitx will open at 20:00; they'll have projections and shows to explain how the moon moves around the Earth and how lunar eclipses happen, while visitors will be able to use the Planetarium's telescopes. At the Castell de Sant Carles, from 20:57, there will be live music to accompany the blood moon; Joan Serra has composed a new piece based on the calculations of the planet's orbits, which will be played by the orchestra of the Escola Ireneu Segarra while images of the lunar eclipse are projected on a large screen.

On the island of Ibiza, the Puig des Molins Observatory will be open from 21:30, offering telescopes to anyone who makes the trip there. There will also be instruments to watch the eclipse available at the car park in Jesus, near Ibiza Town.

Unlike their solar counterparts, lunar eclipses are safe to watch with the naked eye and even better with binoculars or a telescope. For the best viewing points, head to an elevated spot away from any towns and villages. This will also be a great opportunity to see the planets which will shine brighter thanks to the Earth's shade dimming the moon's reflection of light. Look for Mars, a bright orange dot below the moon.
