Mallorca reopens for summer 2020

The island is ready to receive visitors

featured in News & reviews Author Ana Hernández, Mallorca Editor Updated

There's no denying that the summer of 2020 will be like no other. Social distancing, wearing masks and avoiding crowds have become part of our daily life. But you can also feel the anticipation in the air. After months of isolation, we're all craving fresh air, some Mediterranean sunshine and, most importantly, a healthy dose of Vitamin Sea.

Mallorca has already welcomed the first tourist of the season and its borders will open to European travellers on June 21st, with the rest of the world having to wait just a tiny bit longer, until July 1st. Businesses on the island are either already open or will be reopening in the next few days while beachgoers have been hitting the long stretches of golden sand on the island for a couple of weeks now. All is ready for summer 2020 in Mallorca!

Lots of hotels, apartments and villas are offering special discounts to encourage visitors to come to Mallorca, and most have also changed their terms and conditions to be more flexible and make cancelling bookings easier. However, there's no doubt that this will be an unusual season as fewer travellers leave their own countries. But there's always a silver lining and, with a reduced number of visitors and cheaper prices, this could actually be a great summer to come to Mallorca.

Besides, with the Balearics amounting to only 1% of all the Covid-19 cases in Spain and businesses striving to ensure safety and hygiene guidelines are followed to a tee, Mallorca may well be one of the safest destinations on the globe.

Boutique hotels

Boutique hotels have a reduced number of rooms, which translates into a reduced number of guests, meaning that social distancing is much easier here than in large resort hotels. Plus you just can't beat the charm of a boutique hotel with its individually decorated rooms, attentive staff and bespoke services.

Some of our favourites are opening very soon, including the wonderful Son Julia Country House, a luxury boutique hotel just a few minutes from Palma, and the sophisticated L'Avenida in the heart of Sóller, located in an old mansion house. They're both reopening on July 1st. A month after, on August 1st, the rustic Son Amoixa Vell, in a 16th-century farmhouse near the beach of Cala Romantica, will host its first guests.

Rural retreats

For a spot of luxury self-isolation, you can't go wrong with one of Mallorca's finca hotels. These renovated farmhouses and country mansions are located away from the crowds, on the island's central plains or in the Tramuntana mountains, and usually boast only a handful of rooms. You'll be surrounded by orange groves and olive trees or by the imposing Mallorcan peaks – completely isolated from the outside world but indulging in luxury delights, as many of these rural hotels boast garden pools, spas and top-notch restaurants.

If we were to choose the top among them, we'd start with the sumptuous Finca Gomera, a 17th-century stone property among luscious vineyards specialised in cycling holidays that reopens on July 1st. On the same day, Son Jorbo will welcome its first guests. This peaceful rural retreat offers self-catered apartments and bed and breakfast with mountain views. Nestled in the mountains of Sóller, Ca's Xorc is a traditional finca with luxury fixtures, including one of the best restaurants in the area. The hotel reopens on July 20th.

If you can't wait that long, you'd be glad to hear that Casa Font i Roig, a 4-star mansion dating back to 1520, reopens on June 20th. Just about a week later is the turn of Cases de Son Barbassa, a country estate near the beach hot spot of Cala Ratjada that will reopen on June 26th.

Private villas

Private villas are an unrivalled option when it comes to self-isolating. By booking a house all to yourself and your group, you'll ensure that you won't have to cross paths with anyone else for the duration of your holiday. Villas come in all shapes and sizes and fit all budgets. If it were us, though, we'd book a villa at the Son Bunyola Estate, Virgin Limited Edition's collection of luxury villas in the heart of the Tramuntana. There are three secluded villas set across 700 acres of private grounds for you to self-isolate in style: four-bedroomed Son Balagueret and Sa Terra Rotja, and five-bedroomed Sa Punta de S’Aguila.

Yacht charters

Where do celebrities stay when they come to Mallorca? On a private yacht, of course! There's no better way of self-isolating than being surrounded by kilometres of water, and Mallorca has a great selection of boats to rent and yachts to charter. Many come with a crew, all sorts of water toys and even catered meals so you can just relax in the privacy of your sun-soaked deck.

Boat trips

After weeks of confinement, being outdoors, breathing fresh air and feeling the sun's warmth on our skin is just what we need. Boat trips offer that and much more. Book a boat for you and your friends or family and explore the Mallorcan coastline, from the rugged cliffs of the north to the smooth coves of the south. Romantic sunset trips and adventurous snorkelling expeditions are just two of the options available on the island.

Things to do

Mallorca will soon be living in what the Spanish authorities are calling the "new normal" but most of the local businesses are currently open. Therefore, don't think you'll find a ghost island when coming here this summer, Mallorca is as busy and bustling as ever. Some of our favourite shops in Palma have already reopened, including the largest and oldest market on the island, Mercat de l'Olivar, and Rialto Living, with its treasure trove of art, clothing and home decorations.

With safety and hygiene measures in place, it's the perfect time to embark on some private adventures to reduce the number of contacts with other people to a minimum. And there are plenty on offer in Mallorca! You can explore the wild mountains on horseback with Hipica Formentor, ride the winding coastline roads on a scooter or embark on a private tour of the local wineries and distilleries, complete with a tasting at the end.

Beach clubs

Beaches have been welcoming sunbathers and swimmers for a few weeks now. There are restrictions in place, mainly limiting the number of people that can be on the sand at the same time, which in turn means that beaches won't be at all crowded this summer. With the arrival of beachgoers, beach clubs have also started to open their doors.

This summer, you'll find us at Mhares Sea Club, which opened on June 12th and is famous for its sunset sessions, and at Nikki Beach, world-renowned for its glamorous parties around the pool, which will celebrate its opening party on July 2nd.
