A Visit to Santuari de Cura Monastery, Randa

A quiet mountain top monastery with great views of Mallorca

featured in Sights reviews Author Emily Benet, Mallorca Reporter Updated

At the top of the Puig de Randa mountain, with spectacular views of the vast plains of central Mallorca, the monastery of Santuari de Cura provides a retreat from it all. It is looked after by the Franciscan Tertiary order who restored it in the early 20th century.

A place of stillness and contemplation, the mountain first attracted hermits in the fourteenth century. It is a UNESCO world heritage site in the category of cultural landscape. Be prepared for a steep and winding road up to the peak, with many cyclists taking on the challenge.

Welcoming guests all year around, the monastery has thirty-three recently restored rooms for those wanting to enjoy the tranquility for longer at the very reasonable price of 28€ per person. Day trippers can enjoy the large stone courtyard, a visit to the chapel, shop and museum and take refreshment under the arcades of the cafeteria while admiring the views.

It is believed that the spiritual history of Puig de Randa began in the middle ages with Ramon Llull, a steward to the King of Mallorca and composer of frivolous songs, who experienced an epiphany on the mountain top. He constructed an altar to the Virgin of Randa, now known as the Virgin of Cura, and went on to become a renowned writer, mystic and mathematician.

You can visit the chapel to see the Virgin of Cura, while you'll find a statue of Llull just outside. Unfortunately there is little information available for those curious to learn more about him. The small museum costs 2.50€ and contains a collection of miscellaneous objects from missionary work in South America, to ancient manuscripts and oil paintings. There is currently an exhibition inspired by Ramon Llull's 'Book of Wonders', interpreted as a deck of 42 cards painted in gouache and water colour. The shop sells souvenirs, gifts and local produce.

The former convent and dining room of the monastery houses the cafeteria which opens from 08.30 to 19.00 and serves drinks, sandwiches and desserts. The restaurant is open between 19.00 - 21.30 with a high quality menu of Mallorcan cuisine, with mains starting at 15€.

Puig de Randa is situated between the town of Llucmajor and Algaida, and is accessible by car, bike or a one and a half hour bus journey from Palma's Estacion de Intermodal with one change at Club Nautic S'Arenal.

From the summit, over 550m above sea level, you'll be able to see over thirty villages, the sea and the Serra de Tramuntana. As well as the Santuari de Cura, the mountain also is home to the Santuari de Nostra Senyora de Gracia, which opens on weekends only, and Hermita de Sant Honorat.
