Sushi Chef Restaurant Review

Sushi Chef in Port D’Alcudia for elegant sushi in a lovely atmosphere

featured in Restaurant reviews Author Anita Gait, Mallorca Reporter Updated

There’s a danger in resort towns of filling the streets with restaurant after restaurant, offering traditional and local menus to the exclusion of all other food, and wonderful though tapas and paella are, occasionally even tourists are going to fancy something else.

Having been in Mallorca for months now I was certainly on the look out for something different and stumbled upon Sushi Chef; a perfect little sushi restaurant tucked down a side street in Port D’Alcudia.

Minimalist and classic in décor Sushi Chef’s interior is dotted with simple black and white tables and one wall papered with stark trees and Japanese blossoms. High stools line the bar where you can sit and watch the sushi chefs in action or you can sit out on the small terrace that can be covered in case of dodgy weather or left open to the sun.

Open 12-midnight you can wander into Sushi Chef for lunch or dinner or something in between and their full menu is also available for takeaway.

The menu is extensive and takes some reading if you’re not immediately sure what you’re after. Page after page of sushi rolls, nigiri, sashimi and specialities are displayed with glossy pictures and descriptions helping the uninitiated to figure out what they’re ordering and how it comes. If you’re not sure about sushi then not to worry you can also find Japanese salads, sides, noodle and rice dishes as well as teriyaki and tempura meat and vegetable options.

Pick your dishes and request that they come all together or staggered into starters and mains...the choice is yours. When it comes the sushi is elegantly displayed upon black or wooden trays with side plates provided for each diner, perfect for sharing and experimenting, as are the mixed platters which come in several sizes and are a perfect intro to Sushi for anyone wanting to try a bit of everything.

Prices vary and you can spend as much or as little as you wish, a simple dish of 6 maki rolls is under €6, and mixed platters start at €9.95 and go all the way up to €98.80 for the 8 person special menu. If you fancy it try a Japanese beer, sake or cold green tea with your meal and deserts are available in the shape of ice cream or fruit sushi; mango, pineapple or banana rolled with rice and chocolate.

Although everything on the menu was tempting I went for the Menu of the Day which was displayed on their chalk board outside and was definitely the cheapest way of trying several different things. To start was a choice of miso soup or seaweed salad followed by a sushi platter consisting of 4 assorted nigiri and a choice of salmon California or maki rolls, followed by a yakisoba noodle or yakimeshi rice dish, 3 courses for €12.95, definitely a bargain, served everyday 12-8pm.

The miso soup was large for a starter and luckily the sushi and noodles arrived together allowing me to pick and choose between the two as there was ultimately too much for me to finish alone. Everything was lovely; the soup salty and full of flavour, the sushi well made with nice cuts of fish, but the yakisoba noodles were the high point of the meal. The noodles were beautifully cooked in a oily slightly sweet sauce tossed with egg, vegetables and pieces of beautifully cooked beef which, full though I was, I managed to eat every bit of.

Disappointed that I had no room left to try the intriguing fruit sushi as desert I’m afraid I will have to return another time and order rather less to begin with. Another visit shouldn’t be a hardship however as the service was efficient and friendly from my waiter and the chef himself who came to my table to check everything was ok with my meal. The atmosphere was relaxed and pleasant for everyone including a lady who arrived to collect a takeaway order but decided she’d rather eat-in, her order was altered with no fuss at all and she was seated and served in an instant.

Ultimate a lovely little restaurant that makes a nice change from the ranks of all too similar tapas menus and pizza/pasta deals that populate Port D’Alcudia.

Open everyday 12-midnight Sushi Chef is well worth a visit, or you can order by phone or in person for takeaway.
