Visit Cala Llamp near Port d'Andratx, Mallorca

Port d'Andratx also has some very good restaurants and some of the best hotels in Mallorca can be found here. What Port d'Andratx doesn't have is a beach.

If you come to Majorca and are staying in Andratx or Port d'Andrtax then you will have to travel a little way to get to the beach and once you have made up your mind to do that you are in for a real treat, Cala Llamp.

Cala Llamp is on the South side of the peninsula that forms the bay of Port d'Andratx. You will need a car to get to there as the only road to it from Port d'Andratx goes over a steep hill and then deteriorates as you come down the other side towards the water.

Nearby on beaches like Camp de Mar, huge hotels and apartment blocks have been erected for the herds of tourists that come in on the buses each week meaning that getting a sun lounger is tricky and there is usually a sun-burnt lad-on-tour playing techno through his i-phone. Not so at Cala Llamp. The land behind the bay has been built up but as the cliffs here are so steep there are no large hotels or monolithic apartment blocks. Instead you have the summer homes of the rich and famous. Claudia Scheiffer used to have a house here and properties in this bay run into the millions.

Luckily you don't need to be a millionaire to enjoy Cala Llamp. All beaches in Spain are public and Cala Llamp is no exception.

The end of the Tramuntana mountains form the high cliffs that shape the bay here so that on most days the cove is sheltered from the wind. The water here is the beautiful aqua marine that you find in only a few places on the island and because the bay can only be accessed by those with a car it's never as busy as some other beaches near by.

Fans of sand castles and bucket and spade will be disappointed at Cala Llamp. There is no sand here, the cove is formed by cliffs for the most part but in the centre of the bay the rocks form a shelf that gives way to the water. This shelf stops abruptly and the water becomes a couple of metres deep almost immediately making this a great place for snorkelling and for jumping from the rocks into the water.

Cala Llamp is home to the Gran Folies beach club. The club has sun loungers and parasols which are available for €9 a day and there is also a pool with lifeguards making a safe swimming environment for visitors with younger children. The beach club does have a restaurant and some of the food is quite good here but it can be a little hit and miss and like most beach clubs it isn't cheap.

Cala Llamp is one of my favourite places to spend a day on the island. The sun loungers and lack of sand make it comfortable, the water is beautifully clear and never too busy and the view is stunning. It's a quieter more relaxing day than you'll find at most of the well known beaches on south coast and definitely worth a visit.
