The rumours have been swirling for the past couple of months, but yesterday, the Mallorcan Film Commission announced that casting auditions for extras in the movie 'Cloud Atlas', starring Tom Hanks & Halle Berry, will take place next week. Filming is set to begin in the second half of September in various locations on Majorca, including Sa Calobra & the Torrent de Pareis.

Directed by the Wachowskis brothers (The Matrix) and Tom Tykwer (Run Lola Run), the movie is based on the award winning novel by David Mitchell. The story follows six characters living in different time eras who nevertheless are linked by certain factors. Thought by many to be unfilmable due to it's intricate multi-stranded story, the end result promises to be a mindbending but unique film experience.

Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Hugo Weaving, Susan Sarandon, Ben Whishaw and Jim Broadbent have all been confirmed to star in 'Cloud Atlas', some of whom will be playing more than one character. The film's budget has had to be reduced but the makers are gaining tax breaks by using the Babelsberg Studios in Berlin to produce the film.

Mallorca has been pretty successful in attracting major TV and film productions to film here - British hits Mad Dogs and The Inbetweeners - The Movie - both filmed on location here. The Mallorca Fim Commission has been instrumental in raising the profile of the island and have spearheaded a campaign to provide favourable financial conditions for film studios to choose Mallorca. A proposal has recently been submitted to the Spanish government to establish a fund for the islands to allow tax breaks or rebates.

Casting for extras will take place on the 29 & 30th August, from 10.00am to 7.00pm at C /. Socorro, 22 Palma. Take a look at the Mallorca Fim Commission website for more information.
