The Es Firo de Sóller has now become on of the most popular and well-known festivals in Mallorca, with huge numbers of people turning out to enjoy the spectacle.

During the festival, the residents of Sóller and Port de Sóller re-enact the invasion of the Turkish and Algerian pirates and their successful defeat. Tthis colourful festival celebrates the cultural heritage of this region as hundreds of people dress up as both the invaders and the locals, in traditional costumes of the period (1561).

In addition there are several other smaller events that recall the bloody fights between the Moors and the Christians that take place at specific locations in and around Sóller.

"In the afternoon, people gather at the Port to witness an exciting battle between the two sides in which Turkish pirates keep on landing in shore and peasant women arrive from the town in order to help the rest of the population defend their homes. In the meanwhile, shotguns fire and wooden swords and small stone catapults are used. In the evening (in Sóller’s main square) there takes place the final showdown where the invaders are eventually defeated, songs are sung and the festival ends with an incredible display of fireworks."

Entry to this years festival will be 10€ and the number of tickets available to non members of Moors and Christians associations will also be capped at 1,500. The entry fee will include entrance to all of the re-enactments and in addition ticket holders will be able to enjoy a welcome meal and free transport from the town council.

The festival organisation has made the descision to charge because of the growing numbers of people wo are now attending and the subsiquent lack of space and safety issues.

This years festival takes place from the 9th to 11th of May in Sóller and Port de Sóller.
