It’s an exhilarating mix of adventure and natural beauty, perfect for both curious first-timers and confident climbers.

The Archduke's Walkway, Mallorca Island

4. The Archduke's Walkway

Location
Deia

One of the most popular stages of the GR221 and Mallorca’s dry stone route. It is without a doubt one of the most stunning walks on the island. The walkway follows the summit ridge with spectacular views down to the sea.

This is a challenging hike with over 500m of ascent. However, the steep climb out of Valldemossa is well worth it for the views along the north western coast.

Your walk begins in the centre of Valldemossa, and you are soon heading uphill through the woods along stony old mule tracks. The track continues steeply uphill for some time with an occasional breather, and fabulous look-out points with sweeping views of Palma in the distance and the coast beyond Valldemossa. Once on the summit ridge the Archduke’s walkway gives stunning panoramic views of the coast and surrounding Tramuntana mountains. Along the way there are many examples of the old forest dwellers’ settlements and old lime kilns, so this walk is a great opportunity to learn about Mallorca’s rural history.

The Torrent De Pareis Guided HIke, Mallorca Island

6. The Torrent De Pareis Guided Hike

Location
Sa Calobra

The Torrent de Pareis is one of the most impressive gorge walks in the Mediterranean and without a doubt the most sought after hiking tour in Mallorca.

The limestone scenery is outstanding with breath taking views, high steep walls, caves and bizarre rock formations. The tour starts in Escorca and descends into the Lluc gorge coming from the Lluc Monastery. We follow this for a short way until we reach a point where Gorge Blau enters on the left hand side. This is the point known as Sa Fosca. From here the Torrent de Pareis starts. (The word Pareis means couple / together, this is the coming together of the two canyons ) We stay following the main canyon navigating a route between huge boulders sometimes the size of houses. We continue to follow a route down the canyon through obstacles and short drops until finally we reach the beautiful cove of Sa Calobra.

This excursion involves some awkward climbing over large boulders, a safety rope is essential in places as a hand line. It should only be undertaken if you are in good physical condition.

This summer Rock and Ride will be offering introductory deep water soloing sessions every Tuesday and Saturday. These will take place at a variety of venues around the south west coast line.

Mallorca is a world Mecca for this activity with the best climbers from around the world visiting in the summer months. In short, it is what all the cool kids are up to!

The climbing is mostly steep and strenuous (Grade 5+ and upwards). It is also only open to strong swimmers who feel comfortable jumping into the sea, initially from low heights. The DWS area for this trip is in the south-west of the island, 20 minutes' drive from Palma. It's well protected from rough seas and has a good selection of problems from French 5a up to 7a. The height of the easier problems is 2-3 meters above the sea, with the harder problems 7-8 meters high. The climbs are accessed from the shore.

Rock climbing is a sport which is accessible to everybody. The skills you need to keep yourself safe are relatively few and once you have acquired the basics you will be able to use this new hobby as a way of exploring the world. There are stunning sports climbing venues on every continent. Rock climbing is also a sport with endless possibilities and challenges.
