Census reveals high percentage of foreigners

The percentage of foreigners living in the Balearic Islands relative to Spanish nationals is the highest in Spain. The National Statistics Institute has revelaed that the Balearic Islands is home to 242,256 non-Spanish residents, which equates to 21.8% of the population, up 0.1% from 2010.

As from the 1st January 2011, the total registered population of Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formenetra was 1,112,712. The largest group of foreigners on the the islands remains the Germans, with 36,674 residents, followed by Morocco (23,950 residents) and the UK (23,697residents).

There is a large community of South Americans living in the Balearics - Agentinians (10,081), Ecuadorans (11,957), Columbians (9,416) and Brazilians (5,295). The number of South Americans has in fact been dropping, with over 18,000 choosing to return to their homelands. This fall in the South American population has been balanced by an increase in other nationalities, particularly Europeans and Africans.
