A German/Swiss couple have gifted their 1000 acre estate in north west Mallorca to the Mediterranean Wildlife Foundation (FVSM). The area is home to the endangered Black Vulture and this gesture will ensure that their environment remains protected.

Enrique & Heidi Gildemeister rejected offers from property developers for the land, prefering to ensure the native wildlife and their surroundings remain untouched. The estate is located in the north of Mallorca between Pollenca and Escorca and covers six kilometers of coastline. The couple cultivated their land organically and were careful never to use anything that could harm the delicate ecosystem.

This area in the north of Mallorca is home to a large colony of black vultures and hawks. Urban exploitation in this area is banned so that the natural flora and fauna can flourish. In 2002 the area of Es Puig Gros de Ternelles became a dedicated zone to help the recuperation of the Black Vulture colonies, as the number of chicks being born was falling with only one pair producing offspring. This year there have been two Black Vultures born in Mallorca.

The Mediterranean Wildlife Foundation (FVSM) was created in 2002 to protect rural and wild areas. Mallorca is now the only island in Europe where Black Vultures are still native.
