French film Jappeloup, starring actor and director Guillaume Canet, is set to be filmed in Mallorca this autumn. Based on the true story of the show jumper, Pierre Durand, and his horse, Jappeloup, it is expected to be one of the biggest French releases of 2012.

Durand nursed Jappeloup back to health after a serious injury and the duo went on to win the Olympics in Seoul in 1988. Canet, married to Oscar winner Marion Cotillard and winner of a César Award for best director for Ne le dis à personne (Tell no one), will play the legendary Durand.

Canet seems a natural choice for the part. He grew up outside Paris, the only son of horse breeders. Before becoming an actor he was in the Junior French National Equestrian Team. His professional career came to an abrupt halt when, aged 18, he had a serious fall and enforced bed rest gave him time to rethink his future.

Acclaimed actor, Daniel Auteil, perhaps best known for his role in the iconic films Jean de Florette and Manon des Sources, will play Durand's father. The film will be directed by Canadian, Christian Duguay.

The film's production team have been in Mallorca this week scouting locations. Filming will take place in the autumn over a two week period with the majority of scenes being shot at the San Pardo racecourse.
