The Balearic Red Cross has contracted 135 certified lifeguards this year, helping to ensure the safety of thousands of holidaymakers over the summer.

The non-profit organisation confirmed that the number of beaches under the watchful eye of its trained lifeguards has increased since 2010. Of 41 sites, 23 are on the island of Mallorca, 12 on Ibiza and six on Minorca. Beaches allocated a lifeguard will be manned until October.

Figures from 2010 show almost 5,000 individuals required assistance last year, be it rescue operations or simply first aid on the beach. Over 1,000 were stung by jellyfish, 77 were rescued from the water and 70 lost children were returned to their families.
