Mallorca's May wetter than normal

After a cold winter in Mallorca, most were looking forward to the start of summer, with clear skies and sunny days, so it was a bit of a shock when the month of May proved to be wetter than normal.

Even though mainland Spain experienced a drier than normal month of May, with an average 20% less rainfall, Mallorca had more than three times the amount than the year before according to the National Weather Agency (AEMET). Average rainfall time records have been kept since 1971, across 30 years to the end of the last century.

According to the rainfall patterns, it seems that the first ten days were the wettest with showers, drizzle and storms in most parts of the country. The wettest part of Mallorca was in the north at the start of May, where 200 litres per square meter were recorded.

In terms of maximum daily rainfall measured across the country in May,

Palma was hit the hardest. On May 3rd, 112.5 litres per square metre of rain fell in the city, with 106.7 litres recorded at Palma airport, all just within 24 hours. The figure for Palma city was the highest measured for a single day since 1934.

The Balearics temperatures were also colder than usual, especially in Minorca.

Still, the effect of all this rain in Mallorca is that the island is even greener and lusher than usual at this time of the year, which makes the whole of the countryside even more stunning.
