Palma residents unhappy with Ruta Martiana bar crawl

Tuesday evenings see the Ruta Martiana pub crawl take place in the streets around Sa Gerreria - the back streets of central Palma to the east of Placa Major and south of Placa Espana. Residents have noted an increase in noise levels since the no-smoking ban was introduced on 2nd January 2011.

They are now wanting to take legal action against the participating bars, cafes and restaurants, saying that they should be doing more to ensure the participants of the bar crawl leave in a quiet and orderly fashion. The smoking ban has caused groups to take their drinks on to the street in order to have a smoke, and the extra noise this creates late at night is causing a problem.

The bar owners have offered to close earlier at 1.00am, with last orders at 12.30am. In addition, the bar crawl will take place on both Tuesdays and Wednesdays in an attempt to reduce numbers and noise at any one bar during the night.

The Ruta Martiana bar crawl has gained in popularity since it began in October 2010. Participants can expect to purchase pintxos or tapas with a drink for €2 at 25 establishments. The organisers say that it is fun and cheap way for the citizens of Palma de Mallorca to go out with their friends in this time of economic difficulty.
