Strike action hits Mallorca

Union sources say that they expect more than 350,000 workers on the Balearic Islands to support the strike today, as the whole of Spain is engulfed in a general strike. Despite polls saying that less than 20% of workers support the strike, the unions are hoping for a strong turn out to demonstrate their opposition to the government's labour reforms.

A march has been arranged in Palma at 6pm this evening, starting at Placa Espanya, and finishing in Plaza Mayor, and picket lines are expected to form at the airport and in Palma. Minimum services have been guaranteed in health, with emergency services and acute hospital units running normally. In terms of island transport, limited bus and train services will be available, with four trains running on each line, and 75% of public bus services operating.

Flights will be severely disrupted, and a number of tour operators have modified their flight schedules so that their holiday makers stay an extra night if they were due to fly home today. More taxis than usual will be on the streets as they attempt to fill the gap left by the reduced public transport services.
