Requests to Protect Mallorca's Rich Marine Ecosystem

Sóller's city council has asked the Balearic Government to create a Marine Protected Area around the town's coastline. The request, started by Port de Sóller Marina in 2008, is now lead by local fishermen.

This petition joins the one made by the prestigious Oceana foundation this month. The town council wants to reach an agreement between fishermen and tourists to press together for the protection of Sóller's coast. Ultimately, the decision is up to Spain's central government.

Mallorca is home to a number Natural Reserves, many located on the coast. The sea around the island is populated by a variety of species of fish and seagrass. Only last Friday, a dolphin took a twenty-minutes swim around Port d'Andratx, getting near boats and onlookers who could photograph it from a close range.
