Placa Espana is the major transport hub in the centre of Palma. It is where most of the buses & trains start their journeys, and where you catch the traditional wooden train to Soller. As such, there are a number of less refined dining establishments in the area, where you can fork out not insignificant sums for rather ordinary fare (no transport pun intended!). So it is good to know that there are some seriously good alternatives in the vicinity where you are guaranteed a good feed at a decent price.

Mallorca’s fun-seekers, foodies and fashionistas gather at Nikki Beach’s world-famous champagne brunch every Sunday. This brunch bonanza is an all-you-can-eat feast with two hours’ worth of unlimited champagne.

Beef is the main attraction here with quality cuts slow-cooked on a traditional Argentine grill, giving it that delicious barbeque flavour.

On a very windy day in February, we wondered up the sea front in Port de Soller looking for some good tapas and a nice spot to shelter from the weather. Sa Barca filled both of these needs.

There’s a danger in resort towns of filling the streets with restaurant after restaurant, offering traditional and local menus to the exclusion of all other food, and wonderful though tapas and paella are, occasionally even tourists are going to fancy something else.

The Frenchman is one of those people who puts great store by awards and medals, so when we did a search of Mallorca's best restaurants, and saw that a restaurant called Koldo Royo had held a Michelin star for 18 years, it went straight to the top of our list. Run by a chef of the same name, Koldo Royo had gained rave reviews and was considered a flagship restaurant in Palma. I said that I was sure it had closed down a couple of years ago. Nonsense, said the Frenchman, showing me pages from the web with reviews and contact details for the restaurant.

After last weeks expensive mistake of ordering lobster without first checking the price I was worried about dining out in Mallorca. My self inflicted austerity measures dictated that if I was to eat out in one of the many restaurants in Mallorca this week it would have to be on a more meagre budget than I was used to.

Situated at the very bottom of the 365 Calvari steps in with a massive outdoor seating area La Scalinata is a people watchers paradise.

Last summer, I came across Ca'n Pintxo whilst strolling around the charming streets of Sóller. An energetic vibe came from this particular establishment which was tucked away down a pretty side street, less than a hundred metres from the main square. Having just had dinner elsewhere that evening, I made a promise to myself to return to check it out.

Port de Sóller, whilst a popular holiday destination, still has a strong sense of its fishing port roots when you arrive at the waterfront. This, of course, means that there’s an abundance of fresh seafood restaurants around its scenic horseshoe bay.

La Terrazza is the absolute gem of Alcanada’s eateries, just a five minute drive away from busy Port D’Alcudia, hidden from the road by brush and trees and situated on a little point jutting into the sea, this restaurant feels like a little secluded spot of luxury.

The name DaiCa is a fusion of the names of the team behind it, David and Caterina – both with extensive experience in lots of excellent restaurants across Mallorca and mainland Spain, the pair have now turned their culinary hands to running a small restaurant and hotel in the beautiful village of Llubi, in the centre of the island near Inca.

So another weekend, another drive around the tiny, narrow roads of Mallorca, with the Frenchman cringing every time a car approaches as he imagines the car swerving off the road and tumbling down some ravine. For the umpteenth time, I promise myself never to take him on a day out again.

On a summers evening, I headed deep into the depths of Palma’s old town to join in the fun and frolics of the city’s legendary ‘Tapas Tuesday Tour’, known and advertised as Ruta Martiana on the island.
