The supply and marketing of Nitous Oxide or “Laughing Gas” is to be banned in the Balearics after fears that the gas can cause problems with the nervous system.

Nitrous Oxide is openly sold in Magaluf by street vendors working with the clubs and bars. The gas is contained in a pressurised bottle and for a few Euros you get a balloon full. The gas is then inhaled producing a euphoric effect similar to being drunk. But there are fears that the gas is dangerous and there are calls for its supply to be banned.

Health inspectors and Calvia Police have searched clubs and bars in the Calvia neighbourhood and found 75 bottles of nitrous oxide, over 9000 balloons and 33561 filled capsules. In all cases the distributors of the gas have been required to stop marketing and supplying.

The ban has come as fear that the gas itself is dangerous but also that its effects are amplified when mixed with alcohol and that this can increase the risk off accidents.
