107.6 hectares of land have been affected by fires this summer

Despite the heat wave that hit the Balearics this spring and summer, making authorities fear its negative effects on wildfires, the fire fighting campaign has ended with relatively positive results.

73 fires have started in the island this summer, with only 10 of them really developing, affecting 107.6 hectares. The main campaign has concluded, and the upcoming rains mean that there is no high risk of more incidents happening in the next few weeks.

On a sadder note, these fires have caused the death of hundreds of turtles, mainly during those taking place on August 9th and 13th in Petra (Mallorca). The Mediterranean turtle is a protected species, part of the very rich ecosystem of the islands, threatened not only by fires on the Balearics but also plastics in the sea.
