Much more than simply a plate of food and ingrained in Spanish society, tapas is part of their institution, perfectly conveying the relaxed take on mealtime etiquette. Mallorca’s best restaurants are constantly creating new and imaginative ways to prepare and enjoy these mouth-watering dishes. What better way to spend those balmy summer evenings, than by sharing modestly sized, delicious plates of food with a crisp large glass of local wine?
The name DaiCa is a fusion of the names of the team behind it, David and Caterina – both with extensive experience in lots of excellent restaurants across Mallorca and mainland Spain, the pair have now turned their culinary hands to running a small restaurant and hotel in the beautiful village of Llubi, in the centre of the island near Inca.
Last week saw us donning our glad rags as we headed to Nikki Beach Mallorca’s first Amazing Sunday, and what an experience was waiting for us - sun, fun, food and…cocktails.
For laid back lunch times and easy dinners with a beach view head to El Bistro on Puerto Pollenca’s waterfront strip.
Beef is the main attraction here with quality cuts slow-cooked on a traditional Argentine grill, giving it that delicious barbeque flavour.
The brunching concept has been taking the world by storm and Mallorca is no exception. If you're after a long and lazy brunch with family or friends on any day of the week, then there are quite a few fantastic places popping up all over the island.
Summer in Mallorca has just got much more interesting for all the foodies visiting the island. Chef Fernando Pérez Arellano, from Michelin-starred restaurant Zaranda is opening a new restaurant in Puerto Portals.
Ca’n Picafort generally isn’t at the top of any one’s cool list, judging by the main street you’d be forgiven for thinking it’s all Irish bars, full English breakfasts and 2 4 1 novelty cocktails, but then you stumble upon a gem like Mar y Paz and your faith in a whole town can be restored just like that!
As the world continues to embrace a more mindful appetite with sustainability at its core, you'll be pleased to hear that Mallorca hasn’t been left behind. In fact, the island boasts a huge variety of restaurants, bars and cafes offering nutritious organic produce, with integrated awareness, less consumption and reduced harm to the planet.
Last weekend, I stumbled across S’Angel in Inca for a spontaneous late lunch on the way back from the Serra de Tramuntana mountains. Not knowing Inca all that well, we drove around the town at about 15:00 on a Saturday afternoon looking for somewhere to enjoy a spot of lunch. Before long, we came across this remarkable restaurant.
There’s a danger in resort towns of filling the streets with restaurant after restaurant, offering traditional and local menus to the exclusion of all other food, and wonderful though tapas and paella are, occasionally even tourists are going to fancy something else.
Relax in elegant, funky style in the Royal Beach lounge, bar and restaurant located right on the beach at Platya de Muro.
The Frenchman is one of those people who puts great store by awards and medals, so when we did a search of Mallorca's best restaurants, and saw that a restaurant called Koldo Royo had held a Michelin star for 18 years, it went straight to the top of our list. Run by a chef of the same name, Koldo Royo had gained rave reviews and was considered a flagship restaurant in Palma. I said that I was sure it had closed down a couple of years ago. Nonsense, said the Frenchman, showing me pages from the web with reviews and contact details for the restaurant.
Situated at the very bottom of the 365 Calvari steps in with a massive outdoor seating area La Scalinata is a people watchers paradise.
In the depths of Palma’s old town, on Plaza de Sant Francesc, resides a neoclassical style 19th-century mansion, which has been transformed to become Hotel Sant Francesc. This little boutique hotel has many charms from its original character through to its elegant accommodation, chic lobby bar and rooftop sushi restaurant, but on Valentine’s Day I went along to try out the renowned Quadrat Restaurant.
Cala Sant Vincenc situated just outside of Pollenca and Puerto Pollensa is a beautiful old fisherman’s town well worth a visit for a chance to escape the bigger resorts on the coast. Small though it is, it does boast a range of eateries most of which are as close to the beach as possible and can get fairly swarmed by the beach going crowds, which is why I ended up having lunch in Pepe’s bar.
Mallorca’s beach clubs come in various shapes and sizes, some are luxurious and plush, whilst others more nautical chic. No matter what it is you like, you can guarantee that there will be something to accommodate your individual desires.
