2-0 home win for RCD Mallorca
RCD Mallorca took a major step towards securing their place in Spain's premiere football league ‘La Liga' with their victory on Sunday over Getafe. The result gives the team an impressive 42 points which has been sufficient to guarantee safety from relegation for seven of the last nine seasons. Getafe meanwhile is in danger of relegation at just two points above the drop zone.
The 2-0 home win was witnessed by a crowded stadium as tickets had been offered at reduced prices in the run up to the game. The goals, both headers, were scored by Jose Carlos Nunes and Akihiro Ienaga, as they took advantage of poor defending by the visiting team.
RCD Mallorca's success is even more impressive given the relatively low combined cost of the team - it is one of the least expensive line-ups since they re-joined La Liga in 1997/8. And in 2007/08 at the same stage of the season, Mallorca had accumulated just two points.
Much of the credit for the team's success can be attributed to their new Danish coach, Michael Laudrup. Laudrup came to Mallorca last summer when the club was facing massive financial difficulties but he has managed to coax winning performances from his players. Concerns that he may leave the club after a successful season have receded as it is believed that Laudrup is happy and settled on Mallorca.
