A chilly year for Mallorca in 2010

featured in News & reviews Author Nicola Henderson, Site Editor Updated

The Balearic Islands have experienced the coldest year since 1985 this year, with average temperatures being 0.5 degrees lower than usual in Majorca. There has also been 20% more rain in the region than average with Menorca being the worst affected. Mallorca suffered from heavy rainfall in May, October and November.

Snow was big news in March, when towns at sea level found themselves covered in the white stuff, and more snow fell again earlier in December, although only the higher lying areas were affected. Conversely, April and July recorded higher temperatures than usual.

Forecasters expect this winter to be colder than average in Mallorca, and no wetter than usual. However, the long term trend shows that temperatures are indeed rising - when comparing data from the 1970's, it is clear that it is in general hotter now than it was then.
